An Overview of Your Initial Osteopathic Appointment

Osteopathy is an evidence-based form of manual medicine that assesses, structurally and osteopathically diagnoses, and treats the body as a whole. During your initial osteopathic appointment, you will experience a comprehensive assessment and treatment to help restore balance in your body. Here's what to expect from your first session.

The Assessment Process

Your initial appointment will start with a detailed health history so that we can understand more about your medical background and goals for treatment. We'll ask about any pre-existing conditions or injuries you have had in the past, as well as lifestyle factors that could be impacting your current state of health. This information helps us better tailor our treatment plan to meet your individual needs.

From there, we'll do a full-body assessment to identify areas where movement is restricted or misaligned. This includes looking at how you move, how different parts of your body interact with one another, and how those areas are connected through the entire body. We may also use specialized tests such as reflex testing or muscle strength testing to further evaluate specific areas where restrictions are present.

The Treatment Plan

Once we've assessed your condition, we'll create a treatment plan specifically tailored to you. The goal of this plan is to free up any restrictions that might be affecting nerve, artery, vein and lymphatic structures in order to encourage proper drainage of fluids from the area of restriction. Depending on the severity and extent of the restriction, this may include gentle soft tissue massage techniques such as myofascial release or joint mobilization techniques such as articulation or manipulation. It may also include general stretches for muscles and improving flexibility or posture retraining exercises for addressing biomechanical imbalances in movement patterns.

At Manual Motion Osteopathy in Milton, our goal is to provide comprehensive care tailored specifically to meet each patient’s individual needs during their initial osteopathic appointment and beyond. Through this comprehensive approach to manual medicine, we truly strive to help patients find optimal health holistically through osteopathy!
